The pumpkin poem

Poem 14 is James Whitcomb Riley’s When the Frost is on the Punkin, first printed in 1882: frost on the pumpkins, corn stood up in the field to dry, apples heaped red and yellow in the cellar, and a rooster crowing from the fence. Riley wrote it in the speech of rural Indiana, so the explanation page glosses punkin, fodder, shock and the other farm words, with a note for the grown-up reading aloud.

  • Each text was then collated against a second source before it went to the page.

  • A glossary of old or unusual words on every explanation page — the “Words to know” list.
  • Riley’s dialect spelling is kept as he wrote it, with a note for the grown-up reading aloud.

“Over the river, and through the wood” — most children meet Lydia Maria Child’s Thanksgiving poem in a four-verse version. Twenty Autumns prints her complete original twelve stanzas: the whole ride to grandfather’s house, snow, dog, pudding and all.
